When it comes to online shopping in India, there are two major names which come to our minds, Amazon and Flipkart. These two companies are our very one stores residing on the screen of our mobiles and laptops. Plus, whatever you want is a just a click away, making shopping extremely comfortable. From books to clothes, to hosiery goods, to gardening tools to weird gadgets, Amazon and Flipkart have it all! Though Flipkart was once the only dominating website once upon a time, the emergence of Amazon, all thanks to the extensive marketing by them, has given Flipkart a big hit.
Amazon : Amazon is an American electronic-commerce and cloud computing company. The headquarters are located in Seattle, Washington. The founder Jeff Bezos started the company back on the 5th of July 1994, when e-commerce was not even a big thing. Slowly but surely the company has become this global tech giant and is the largest Internet-based retailer in the world by total sales and market. The company started off as an online bookstore much like Flipkart but now sells just about anything and everything. Consumer electronics such as Amazon Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV and Echo are also produced by the company.
Flipkart : as we all know it is an e-commerce website. Founded by Sachin and Binny Bansal in the year 2007, the headquarter is situated in Bangalore, Karnataka. Over the years, Flipkart gained major popularity and became the go-to place for buying electronics, books, fashion accessories and lifestyle goods online. As of April 2017, the net worth of this ever-expanding platform was a whopping 11.6 billion. Both Sachin and Binny Bansal have been a part of the alumni of the Institute of Technology, Delhi and surprisingly, have, worked for a rival company Amazon, before they decided to have their own startup. Over the years, Flipkart has grown expansively and hired more than 33,000 employees. The Big Billion Sale by Flipkart has definitely helped in boosting the company’s profits. A turnover of $300 million was recorded during the sale period of 2014 alone.
Which One is Better ? Amazon and FLipkart
So the major question which lies ahead of us, is which one is better Amazon or Flipkart? When it comes to seller satisfaction, Amazon emerges as the winner. A study includes 1,100 sellers across 16 big and small Indian cities. It was conducted from January to March 2016 and included sellers who already use e-commerce portals as well as those who intend to do so in the next few months. Amazon emerged to be a clear winner in this department. the US company was also ahead of its Indian competitors in terms of overall awareness about local e-commerce brands.
Ever since Amazon launched its India Arm back in 2012, which was the years later the Flipkart launch in 2009 Amazon has very successfully been able to catch up in the market and unsettle Flipkart’s monopoly in the e-commerce sector. However, it is Flipkart which leads in terms of the number of items offered. One of the major advantages Amazon provides with, is the Prime services. As per the Prime services, the member has to pay a total sum of Rs 499 annually to avail free shipping on Amazon prime products and they also get access to other perks like Amazon Prime TV where they can binge watch their favorite movies as well as TV shows. Coming to the features provided by each of these sites, both these services offer great features including COD (Cash on delivery) option that makes the shopping experience very simple and comfortable. You will get SMS alerts whenever your product is shipped, is about to be delivered to you and has been delivered. Amazon.in has one day or two-day delivery options by which you can get your products delivered in one or two days by paying some extra charges. On the other hand, Flipkart has ‘Flipkart First’ service that cost Rs. 500/- per year and the benefits you will get our free shipping on all your orders, same day delivery (depends on your location), priority customer service, exclusive offers and priority access to newly launched products and offers.
Coming to customer support, Amazon is far better than Flipkart. The support staff of Amazon is quick to take note of the problem concerned and promptly solve it. Also, Amazon’s refund policy is unmatchable. Flipkart, on the other hand, is slightly ill-equipped when it comes to customer services. There has been a lot of confusion with regards to the support staff of Flipkart, therefore leaving consumers absolutely frustrated.
Coming to prices, discounts and returns, it is Amazon which emerges as the winner. The prices on Amazon are far more competitive than Flipkart, though both offer discounts on their products time to time, especially during festival season or on some special occasion. Both these e-commerce sites accept returns and have their own return policy. The returns in Amazon.in are more flexible as compared to Flipkart.
Talking about the user interface, the Flipkart app and website is easier to use and customise when compared to the Amazon site. One is able to filter their choices with ease, without any hassle. Both have their own courier and shipping services as well. Flipkart owns e-Kart while Amazon uses Amazon transportation services or ATS. Both these services are equally reliable, but Amazon definitely provides faster shipping and better packaging.
In the end, we would like to conclude that Flipkart may still be the Indian e-retail giant, but Amazon is slowly but surely inching very close. Now, more and more people are opting for Amazon, over Flipkart and it’s high time that Flipkart pull their socks up and run for their money.
